Happo One Accommodation

Overview

Happo One village is the beating heart and the central hub of the Hakuba Valley; located between the Echoland and Wadano areas and sits at the base of the Happo One ski resort.

The village has the majority of shopping, dining, nightlife and amenities, including high quality international ski schools, helpful ski hire staff and experienced backcountry guides. Despite having so much to offer, the village is pretty compact with everything located within relatively short walking distance.

There is a buzz around Happo One, whether on the Usagidaira mountain-top terrace on a powder day or on the narrow village streets on the weekend.

Happo One offers a great mix of accommodation types, from traditional Ryokans, welcoming boutique hotels, log cabins, slopeside apartments, family homes and arguably the most spectacular chalet in Japan!

The Happo Bus Terminal is something of a transport hub both for arrivals into the area and Hakuba Valley shuttle bus services connecting the different villages & ski resorts, including direct bus to Cortina – the powder resort!

Happo One village is a great choice for anyone wanting to be in the thick of the action and well connected to the rest of the Hakuba Valley.

Neighbourhoods

Happo One can be thought of in terms of four areas, each offering a slightly different stay experience and environment.

Slopeside

The Slopeside area stretches from the Nakiyama ski lifts, past the Shirakaba lifts and up as far as Kokusai lifts.

All of the accommodation in this area has excellent access to the slopes either across the street or a very short walk to the ski lifts, with a few true Ski In / Ski Out options.

There are a few popular restaurants and bars in this area, especially around the Nakiyama ski lifts

Central

The Central Village runs from Route 322 to the Slopeside area, bordered by Lower Wadano forest to the North and the Mizuho area to the South.

The area is defined by narrow streets and relatively densely space buildings with restaurants and bars on your doorstep.

The Nakiyama and Shirakaba ski lifts are within easy walking distance. Everything is convenient and walkable but without the space and tranquil forest setting of Wadano and Goryu villages.

Mizuho

This area occupies the outskirts of Happo One heading out towards the Echoland area and is part Happo / part Echoland.

Mizuho offers open space and mountain views with everything that Central Happo and Echoland have to offers within walking distance.

Norway Forest Village

From the Nakiyama ski lifts, past the ski jump stadium and into the forest, the Norway Forest Village area provides a true off-the-beaten-track setting within reach of Central Happo.

Ski Resort

The Happo One ski resort is the largest in the Hakuba Valley and has a little something for everyone: incredible views, a great variety of long piste runs including steeps, beginner slopes and moguls, freestyle park, great ski school & guiding services and fantastic backcountry terrain.

1) Nakiyama – the main access point for day trippers, located down the road from the Ski Jumping Stadium with a mix of red and green runs

2) Shirakaba – featuring a mixuture of black, steep reds, a short green at the bottom and the main ADAM Gondola (the fastest way to access the upper mountain).

3) Kokusai – with a small patch of First Timer terrain at the bottom but with the main access being a black run.

4) Sakka – perfect for beginners with multiple green runs that are well suited to beginners getting their turns in.

Dining & Nightlife

The choice of cuisines ranges from Mexican, German, Italian, Thai & Burgers to plenty of Japanese restaurants. Choose from specialist Ramen, Soba, Yakiniku BBQ, Sushi & Eel to Izakayas offering delicious local classics.

The Slopeside area, specifically around the Nakiyama ski lifts, has a concentration of restaurants and bars with more options throughout the Central Village.

Central Happo One village has arguably the best nightlife in the Valley with Echoland as the main competitor. DJs come up from Tokyo on weekends during the winter season.

Onsen

The best onsen in the area are accessible from Central Happo: Kurashita-no-yu is well worth the 17 minute walk over the Hakubao bridge, Mimizuku no yu is 20 mins walk toward Hakuba Town or Obinata no yu is available for private hire with a pick up / drop off service.

Within Central Happo, there are two public onsen – Happo no yu & Sato no yu – both are popular and convenient options open to all.

In the Mizuho neighbourhood, Goryukan and Rosenheim Hotels offer great onsen with indoor & outdoor baths and sauna.
